November 26, 2010

Following the announcement made by China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) that it would kick off its mobile number portability in late October 2010, India's telecom minister announced on November 25 that India will launch pan-India mobile number portability service on January 20, 2010 that was originally planned to launch by March 31, 2010, the Economic of Time of India reported on November 26. Should the service go as planned, more than 700 million Indian mobile phone users will be able to switch to different telecom services provided by mobile networks of any Indian telecom operators. On November 25, India initiated such service in Rohtak in Haryana, where users are allowed to switch to any of nine operators, including Airtel, Idea Cellular, BSNL, Aircel, Loop, Vodafone, Etisalat, Sistema, and Vidocon, with a maximum migration fee of 19 Rupees (US$0.41; US$1 = 45.8 Rupees), according to the same source. In the demonstration held on November 25, mobile phone users who originally subscribed to telecom services provided by BSNL successfully switched to Idea Cellular's network.
